Nordic Cruise Company prepares four luxury vessels
New Oslo-based Nordic Cruise Company is planning to build a set of four expedition ultra-luxury yachts, the first to be delivered in May 2020.
President and CEO Ulf Henrick Wynnsdale tells Cruise Industry News that much of the fundraising is complete and the 220-pax vessels will be hammered out at Spain’s MetalShips & Docks with 10-month intervals.
They will be the first expedition ships that are prepared for LNG power, able to sail for up to 36 hours on LNG while burning marine gas oil the rest of the time. They will also be equipped with hydrogen fuel cells.
“We are not going to be the second best. We are going to be the best. I know we have tough competition, but competition is always good,” Wynnsdale claims.
The design of the ships has changed a number of times, most recently from an ultra-luxury yacht with some expedition capabilities, to the current version of an expedition ship while keeping the mega-yacht look. The company aims to target the high-end US market.
“We plan to stay far away from the word cruise ship,” Wynnsdale explains. “There are so many people that have a totally wrong picture of what cruising is all about. Expedition and voyages will sound much better.”
