Name of new LCC to be announced in coming months
In its latest bid to boost profits and fight off competition from low-cost carriers, Lufthansa has announced it will merge its short-haul European and German domestic routes under a new low-cost brand from 1 January 2013. The merger includes routes currently operated by its existing low-cost airline Germanwings. But the plan excludes flights from Lufthansa’s hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. The name of the new carrier will be announced in the coming months.
The aim is for the new low-cost unit to carry more than 18 million passengers in the first year. That compares to Lufthansa’s current figure of 106 million pax a year.
Other major European airlines have plans to develop low-cost carriers, with Air France-KLM aiming to raise the profile of its low-cost unit Transavia.
