Boom in charter flights leads to new scheduled flights
With the greater availability of charter flights, more tourists flying to Indonesia are choosing destinations beyond the traditional hotspot of Bali.
Charter flights from China and India have increased 40-50% from last year, driven by intense promotions and multi-destination packages, according to Gajah Tour Bali.
Lombok, Banyuwangi, Bromo, Komodo and Belitung are the most popular, where tourists typically stay for five days and indulge in activities like water sports. Gajah Tour is planning to add more destinations such as Padang and Morotai.
Charter flights are a way to increase arrivals as the government works towards its target of 20 million visitors by 2019, says Eddy Sunyoto, international marketing manager at the Association of Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies.
Testament to their success, some charters are turning into scheduled flights, for example Lion Air’s service to Jakarta from Hainan and to Manado from Shanghai and Guangzhou, as well as Garuda‚Äôs flights between Jakarta and both Shanghai and Guangzhou.
