New cruise ships to watch for in 2017

Eight new ships to launch by cruise lines this year
Eight new ships will be deployed by various cruise lines this year, including the world’s largest in terms of passenger capacity, to hold 5,700 cruisers at maximum occupancy.
However, if 2016 was a year of big new ships, 2017 is different. Compared to last year’s seven, this year’s eight – not including two exclusively for the Chinese market – will have just 13,900 new beds; last year it was 18,500. And two of the ships account for nearly 10,000 of these beds.
The world’s biggest for passenger capacity will be MSC Meraviglia (5,700), but six will hold fewer than 1,000 passengers, three fewer than 500.
There will also be some highly anticipated first-in-class ships, like MSC Meraviglia, and newbuilds from Silversea and National Geographic.
Perhaps the most striking is the five-mast Flying Clipper, the first newbuild tall ship for Star Clippers in 15 years. It is modelled on a legendary sailing ship, France II, which was the world’s biggest when it launched in 1912.
Star Clippers’ largest ship, it will carry 300 passengers and be powered by 3700 square metres of sail, plus fuel-efficient engines for when there’s no wind. Flying Clipper will have 150 cabins, but only 34 with balconies.
