“First comprehensive record” of Thailand’s early tourism industry
A new book on the history of the tourism industry in Thailand and the pioneers behind its early development has been published by a hotel chain, Thai tourism and other partners.
Written by Thailand-based journalist and lecturer Steve Van Beek and edited by Roy Howard, a former advertising manager at Thai Airways, ‘Thailand Tourism: The Early Days’ charts the rise of the industry since the 1950s.
It examines the people, places, institutions, hotels and agencies that “transformed Bangkok from the Venice of the East to a dynamic gateway to all the attractions the country now has to offer”.
The glossy, full-colour book examines the challenges faced by these early pioneers and, through profiles, anecdotes and quotes, underscores the need to preserve their stories.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways, the hotel company Dusit International, the Chiva-Som International Health Resort, Boon Rawd Brewery, Bangkok Bank, Central Group, silks designer Jim Thompson and retail firm Siam Piwat are the partners behind the project.
“I think it’s vitally important that the new generation understands what happened in the past, and how the risks and opportunities taken by the early pioneers ultimately shaped the industry as we know it today,” said Chanin Donavanik of Dusit International.
“In producing the book, we hoped to preserve the inspiring stories and wisdom of our forebears by featuring as many influencers from 60 years ago as possible.”
He added: “While we could not include everyone we originally planned to, either due to time or budgetary constraints, or lack of information available in cases where people have either moved or passed away, we still managed to include most of the key players.”
A free ebook version, in English and Thai, will be available at thailandtourismtheearlydaysbook.com.
