Surf Air Europe to steal high-paying customers
Europe’s traditional airlines are already challenged by low-cost rivals, but now they face a new competitor at the business-class end of the market.
Backed by venture capital, Surf Air Europe plans to link London with Geneva, Zurich and Cannes from October, with an unusual approach to fares – subscriptions where customers pay £2,500 (€2,930) a month for unlimited travel.
The airline will initially fly just three eight-seater aircraft. But that may take some of the most high-paying customers away from British Airways and Swiss.
In California, Surf Air has grown to 3,000 members after launching three years ago and is due to start making a profit in the next quarter. About 85% of its members previously flew with commercial airlines.
