New “people’s choice” responsible tourism award

Voting open for brand new category until September 5

The World Responsible Tourism Awards at WTM, sponsored by the Sultanate of Oman Ministry of Tourism, have introduced a new category opened for one month only: “People’s Choice for Responsible Tourism”. The public can choose their favourite responsible company from a selection of five past winners.

Destination British Columbia is the sponsor for the category, which encourages the public to select “their own star” of responsible tourism. People can vote at http://www.responsibletravel.com/awards/categories/peoples-choice.htm

The five businesses, selected by World Responsible Tourism Awards judges, are Battlesteads Hotels (originally an 18th century farmhouse, this net zero carbon neutral property has a biomass boiler supplied by a sustainable forestry, solar thermal panels, charging points for electrical vehicles and rainwater collection); Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve (conserving over 100,000 hectares of Patagonian temperate rainforest); Reality Tours & Travel (raising awareness of the reality of slum life and raising money to assist the communities it works with); 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking (training and employing women in Nepal as high-altitude guides and porters); and Whale Watch Kaikoura (a Maori-owned whale watching operator carrying up to 100,000 passengers per year using energy-efficient craft).
