Munich Airport wins key battle for third runway

Federal court rejects final appeals against runway three
Germany’s second largest airport and a key Lufthansa base, Munich has won approval for a third runway after a federal court rejected the final appeals against it.
The decision comes as rival hub London Heathrow finally won the backing of an independent commission to build a third runway following years of political indecision. Environmental protesters there temporarily disrupted flights earlier this week.
Munich expects to see passenger numbers rise from around 40 million a year now to 58 million by 2025. Approval for a new runway comes despite Munich residents voting against it in 2012. However, German airline and tourism associations have praised the new ruling.
