5,714-pax ship christened by movie icon Sophia Loren
MSC Cruises has christened its new flagship Meraviglia, the largest vessel to be launched by a European line this year. The 5,714-passenger ship was anointed by movie icon Sophia Loren in Le Havre on Saturday.
The new ship, whose name is Italian for wonder, features two exclusive shows by Cirque du Soleil as well as 12 “distinct” dining options, an “enhanced” version of MSC’s Yacht Club, plus an 80-metre LED ceiling above the promenade.
It is also the first of 11 “next generation” ships being built by the company to boast its new onboard technology platform, MSC For Me.
Meraviglia will be based in the Mediterranean during summer 2017, then in northern Europe next year, before moving to Miami in 2019.
During the ceremony, attended by more than 2,000 guests, MSC Cruises’ executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago thanked STX France and its shipyard in St Nazaire where Meraviglia was built. He also praised godmother Loren for the “good fortune” she has given to the line since becoming godmother of MSC Lirica in 2003.
MSC chief executive Gianni Onorato, who also spoke during the event, praised travel agents around the globe for their continued support.
MSC Cruises recently signed a new memorandum of agreement with STX firming an order for two LNG-powered “mega cruise ships” (pictured), with options for two additional vessels. These four ships will become MSC Cruises’ World Class. The first will be delivered in 2022 and 2024, the options for 2025 and 2026.
