Winter storm affects New York airports and Philadelphia
Heavy rain, snow and dangerous winds are knocking out power lines and bringing further chaos to the north-eastern US barely a week after Superstorm Sandy crashed into the region. Airlines have cancelled more than 1500 flights, with Newark airport experiencing the most cancellations. Philadelphia and the other major New York airports are also affected. Some flights may resume later on Thursday. American Airlines has cancelled at least 365 flights on Wednesday and Thursday, United Continental about 500, Delta Air Lines about 200.
“You have to prepare for the storm that’s coming in a few hours,” New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told local residents, before joking in reference to the Bible: “I’m waiting for the locusts and pestilence next.”
