Lufthansa CEO defends hard line on unions
Pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit is threatening more strikes in a row at Lufthansa over retirement benefits and cost cuts, putting the airline’s chief executive Carsten Spohr on the defensive over the hard line he is sticking to.
The union claims that Lufthansa has rejected its offer of concessions. Walkouts could start any time, it said, and could hit Lufthansa, Germanwings or Lufthansa Cargo.
“If strikes are the price to pay to make Lufthansa fit for the future, then we must pay it,” Spohr told journalists at a conference in Vienna.
“We have not yet reached the same conclusion as to how Lufthansa must be structured in order to deal with the rivals who are knocking on our door and threatening to bring a new wave of low-cost flights to Germany and Austria.”
The long-running dispute between LH and its pilots has prompted a dozen strikes over the last 18 months, costing the airline hundreds of millions of euros.
