More boarding passes sent to smartphones

Mobile technology is making an increasing impact on the airline industry

New research has found that, in the next two years, airlines worldwide will be sending around 15% of their boarding passes to passengers’ smartphones. That’s around 480 million mobile boarding passes, which is three times the 160 million sent to passengers’ phones in 2010. About half of those airlines already offering mobile boarding passes also now give passengers the opportunity for mobile ticket booking and purchasing. For corporate flyers in particular, using a smartphone for booking, providing seat selection and flight information, going through security and boarding helps add loyalty.
Mobile Ticketing has enormous potential for other modes of transport too, including train travel and suburban transport systems. There are still some annoying technical drawbacks, however, such as occasional problems reading barcodes.
