Sexual assault “a bit of a problem” on Viking Line

An eighth Swede has been detained following an alleged gang rape on a Viking Line ferry sailing from Stockholm to the Finnish port of Turku at the weekend.

The eight men are accused of being involved in the incident on board the Amorella, whose overnight voyages are popular for their party atmosphere with tax-free alcohol on sale for some of the crossing. The 45-year-old victim says she was approached in her cabin by the group. According to reports, some of the accused are already known to police.

According to witnesses interviewed by the newspaper Aftonbladet, the crossing was “messy”, with many drunken passengers and a fight breaking out at a disco, after which staff were forced to call for order.

Finnish police detained some of the men, whose extradition to Sweden is now being sought, and Swedish police detained others after the return crossing.

A rising number of rapes and sexual assaults are happening on ships operated by Viking Line and other Scandinavian cruise lines, according to reports.

“We at Viking Line find the news about the alleged rape very tragic and sad and we are aware that issues concerning sexual assault are a bit of a problem on our cruises, however we work unconditionally with the help from the police force to prevent these crimes from happening,” Tony Öhman, Viking Line’s head of marine operations, told The Local.
