Malaysian authorities finally decide to release data

Almost 50 pages of complex communications data showing messages sent between satellites and missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has been released this morning.

The decision by Malaysian authorities to release the data comes more than two months after families of missing passengers asked for it to be made public. However, the complexity of the data means it will take families and experts working on their behalf to process it and make any conclusions.

The 47-page document contains hundreds of lines of communication logs, or “handshakes”, between the plane and a satellite system belonging to the British company Inmarsat. The company said it had wanted to wait for Malaysia to give the go-ahead before it released the information.

“The first thing we’re going to expect feedback on is does the data look right,” said Sarah Bajc, whose partner Philip Wood was on the aircraft. “Is it as complete as we’re being led to believe it is?”
