MICE attractions in China growing fast

News about the meetings industry from IT&CM in Shanghai

The MICE attractions of China’s second-tier cities are growing, according to participants at IT&CM China, which took place in Shanghai last week. Helped by recent upgrades in marketing and hardware, cities such as Xiamen and Wuzhen are reporting a surge in MICE business. Xiamen saw 30% more MICE arrivals last year and is expecting at least 10 big medical conferences this year. The 520-key Xiamen International Conference Hotel opened in 2011. Wuzhen, which launched its MICE department just three years ago, attracted six to eight conference groups a week in 2011 with between 15 and 500 people.
In related news, a new B2B website has launched targeting event planners in China. Still in the beta version, by the end of 2012, MICE123.com will list several thousand pre-screened venues, destinations and service providers in cities in China, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand. An English version will be introduced at a later stage.
