Dutch PM appeals to Russia to “respect and cooperate” with report
Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was destroyed over Ukraine by a Russian-made Buk missile, the Dutch Safety Board has concluded in its final report on the crash in July last year, which killed all 298 people on board, most of whom were Dutch.
The remit of the board was not to address questions of responsibility and the report did not specifically blame any group for the tragedy, to Russian-backed separatists or to Ukrainian forces.
“A 9N314M warhead detonated outside the aeroplane to the left side of the cockpit. This fits the kind of warhead installed in the Buk surface-to-air missile system,” said board head Tjibbe Joustra as he presented the report.
The report said that simulations of the missile’s trajectory show it came from an area southeast of Grabovo, which was mainly controlled by separatists. Russia denies that a Buk missile brought the plane down and says that the report is biased.
The report is likely to strengthen calls within the airline industry for a review of how information is shared in conflict zones.
A separate criminal investigation is taking place, about which Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said: “In regard to our relationship with Russia, this inquiry has an enormous impact, both in the Netherlands and abroad and certainly in Russia. What I want to do now is appeal to the Russian authorities to respect and cooperate with this report. The obligation we now have is that we do all we can to ensure that those who are responsible face justice.”
