Marriott’s customer update on Hurricane Sandy


Our hearts go out to the people and communities in the Caribbean and Eastern United States and Canada impacted by the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy. Hundreds of Marriott and Ritz-Carlton properties were in the path of the storm.

Thankfully, we have no reports of guest or associate injuries. While most of our hotels are open, we are assessing the extent of impact on each hotel and efforts are underway to fully restore operations in those properties affected by the storm. We express our appreciation to associates who have helped coworkers, guests, local authorities and members of their community to weather the storm.

Generally, we waive cancellation fees for guests holding confirmed reservations at the hotels that have been affected by the storm. However, hotels reserve the right to make this decision on a case-by-case basis. Marriott has a corporate policy against price-gouging, which prohibits hotels from raising rates in excess of normal retail rates sold within the preceding 30 days of a disaster or significant event. In addition, our hotels need to comply with all pricing laws applicable in these situations.

Support Recovery Efforts by Giving To Red Cross Disaster Relief
Marriott International contributes to the American Red Cross International Response Fund to help provide aid worldwide to victims of disasters; the company will designate part of its annual contribution toward Hurricane Sandy relief. Financial donations help the Red Cross provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to those affected by disasters like Hurricane Sandy. To donate, people can:

Visit redcross.org, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or send contributions to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013.
Give blood. The storm caused cancellation of Red Cross blood drives in the affected area, resulting in the loss of several thousand units of blood and platelets.
To schedule a blood donation or get more information about giving blood, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). To give blood, someone must be at least 17 years of age, meet weight and height requirements and be in general good health.

Associates at Marriott Corporate Headquarters can participate in the next Washington Hospital Center blood drive on Thursday, December 13.

Financial donations made to the American Red Cross are tax-deductible in the U.S. Please check with a local tax advisor for applicable rules outside the U.S.
