Marriott declares “golden age of travel”


Hotel giant to double presence in Caribbean and Latin America

Arne Sorenson, the new CEO of Marriott International, says that Marriott plans to double its presence in the Caribbean and Latin America by 2017. The company currently has 69 hotels in the region under nine of its 18 brands and 35 hotels are signed or under development. The area’s first Ritz-Carlton Reserve at Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, the JW Marriott in Cusco, Peru, and the Courtyard by Marriott at Mexico City Airport are all due to open in 2012. The company intends to double its footprint in Colombia with the addition of hotels in Cartagena and Cali.
“The rising middle class throughout the region is eager to travel to new places and do business on the road,” Sorenson said. “Worldwide, we’re seeing a golden age of travel, and Latin America is at the forefront. This, when combined with the strong performance and preference of our brands in the gateway markets, provides tremendous opportunity.”
