Victims included tourists on their way to Caribbean cruises
The man who went on a shooting rampage through Fort Lauderdale airport in Florida, killing five people and injuring six, has been charged by prosecutors and could face the death penalty.
The victims included several tourists who were on their way on Friday to join various Caribbean cruises.
Esteban Santiago, 26, had been assessed for mental health problems in Alaska, yet still he was able to board a flight to Fort Lauderdale with a one-way ticket and carrying a semi-automatic handgun.
The suspect told agents he planned the attack, though it is not known why he chose this target. Terrorism is not being ruled out.
Last November, he entered an FBI office in Alaska in an agitated and incoherent state, carrying a loaded magazine. He had left his gun in his car, with his newborn child. In a mental health evaluation, he told the FBI he was hearing voices and thought he was being controlled by US intelligence.
