More than 230 injured, 41 dead in coordinated attack
Foreigners are likely to be among 41 people killed and more than 230 injured in a gun and bomb attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk, Europe’s third biggest international airport.
Three attackers wearing black began shooting outside and inside the terminal late last night, then blew themselves up when police fired at them. Early signs suggest Daesh, or Islamic State, was responsible.
Ataturk has long been seen as a possible and vulnerable target, the BBC reports, with X-ray scanners at the terminal entrance but little in the way of security checks for cars. Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the attackers arrived by taxi.
Flights have now resumed at the airport, but about a third have been cancelled and many are delayed.
A Danish traveller described the scene last night as “total chaos”. Henrik Madsen was at a restaurant after going through security when he heard the explosions. He said everyone was in a state of panic, and security guards and police did not seem to be able to speak English.
“I tried to get information about what happened, but they could not answer me,” he said. “They were actually angry when you tried to get any answers out of them.”
He and about 1,000 other passengers were herded into a parking garage and left waiting for information before being led outside.
