Union agrees to rise in retirement age and lower costs
Lufthansa has welcomed proposals by pilots to end a long-running dispute over pay, retirement and low-cost expansion. A resolution between the two sides would stop a series of strikes staged since April 2014, resulting in lost profits of over €300 million.
Among other suggested concessions, the Vereinigung Cockpit union agreed to a rise in the average retirement age and lower costs.
“It’s very positive that VC has come to us for the first time in years of negotiations with a proposal that includes cost cuts,” the airline’s chief executive, Carsten Spohr, told journalists.
However, he added that the union’s suggestion that a deal could now be reached by September was unrealistic due to the complexity of the topics.
