Airline to appoint Carsten Spohr as CEO: press report

Lufthansa will appoint Carsten Spohr, currently a management board member in charge of the passenger airline business, as its new chief executive, the German tabloid Bild reported on Friday.

The current CEO Christoph Franz is due to depart when his contract expires at the end of May, to become chairman of the board of the Swiss pharmaceuticals giant Roche.

Sources at the airline told Bild that an “internal” decision had been made on the issue and that the company’s supervisory board would officially make the appointment at a meeting in March. A Lufthansa spokesperson said the process of deciding on a new CEO was continuing.

Germany has a two-tier board structure for listed companies, in which the chief executive and other senior managers are appointed by a non-executive supervisory board.
