Lufthansa talks with pilots break down

Months of negotiations come to nothing
Months of negotiations appear to have come to nothing after talks between Lufthansa and a pilots’ union over pay and early retirement have broken down.
Agreement was not reached on a number of points. Among them, Lufthansa wants to raise pilots’ age for early retirement from 55 to 58, after which pilots can get 60% of their basic salary. Pensions, salaries and job security are other sticking points.
The labour dispute stretches back four years and has resulted in more than a dozen strikes at a cost of €500 million, the most recent in September last year.
While Lufthansa insists that a deal is still within reach, Vereinigung Cockpit says that while it is willing to play a role in helping to make the airline more competitive there is no point in continuing talks.
