Pilot union extends Lufthansa strike to second day
Following Monday morning’s announcement of a long-haul strike at Lufthansa during Tuesday, German pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit now says it will extend the walkout into Wednesday. This time it will be a 24-hour strike targeting short-haul Lufthansa and Germanwings flights.
Despite Tuesday’s strike, Lufthansa says it is operating 90 out of around 170 long-haul flights and all seven cargo flights, as other pilots volunteered to work. But it expects several hundred flights to be axed on Wednesday, when it has 1,350 short-haul flights planned.
Talks between the airline’s management and the union, which represents about 5,000 Lufthansa and Germanwings pilots, broke down last week. The union has offered concessions, including raising the average retirement age to 60 and looking at ways to cut costs.
But, according to union spokesman Markus Wahl, Lufthansa has not shown any willingness to reach a deal. Lufthansa said it offered talks over the weekend, but the union said the offer provided no basis for talks.
