Random psychological checks of pilots could become the norm
Random psychological checks of pilots could become the norm at Lufthansa, helping to reduce the risk of tragedies like the crash of a Germanwings plane in the French Alps in March.
In his first press interview since the crash, Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa’s chief executive, said that surprise checks could reduce uncertainty over pilots’ possible mental health issues.
Andreas Lubitz, the co-pilot of the March 24 Germanwings flight, locked the captain out of the cockpit and crashed the plane, killing 150 people. His motives are a mystery, but it is known he experienced severe depression.
“Insights into the co-pilot’s motives could come out of a so-called psychological autopsy that will be done as part of prosecutors’ investigation,” Spohr said.
