Unions invited to roundtable discussion
In an effort to improve relations with staff after recent strikes, Lufthansa has invited the three main unions representing its employees to a roundtable discussion on job prospects and retirement schemes.
Lufthansa needs to cut costs to better compete with low-cost carriers and Gulf-based airlines and it wants to expand, for example, its low-cost subsidiary Eurowings. It is also trying to change a rule that allows crews to retire at 55 as well as introduce new defined-contribution pension schemes.
It is asking unions representing pilots, cabin crew and ground staff to attend the meeting on December 2 to discuss the issues.
The union Verdi has welcomed the move, saying that such a meeting was long overdue.
