New offer follows collapse of talks with union
In another attempt to restart talks and end a long-running dispute with its pilots, Lufthansa has made a new offer for pay and working conditions. Informal talks with the Vereinigung Cockpit union collapsed last week.
As the German carrier tries to cut costs to better compete with low-cost and Gulf rivals, it has agreed wide-ranging deals with cabin crew and ground staff but not yet with 5,400 pilots on German contracts.
The new offer to pilots consists of a 4.4% pay rise in two stages and a one-off payment. Lufthansa also proposes keeping the much disputed early retirement scheme for new employees, which it previously wanted to scrap – if the union agrees that pilots’ average retirement age is raised from 59 to 60.
