Group adds pressure to bookings via global distribution systems
Lufthansa Group is adding pressure to clients and passengers who book tickets via global distribution systems.
In addition to the €16 fee for GDS bookings launched in September 2015, Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian will now charge extra for luggage.
The fee for baggage on Lite fares on domestic or European routes booked on the airlines’ own websites rises from June 13 to €25 for the first bag.
But as a part of the group’s drive to create “differentiation” between its own direct-booking ecosystem and bookings via GDSs, passengers who book bags through Sabre, Amadeus or Travelport will face an additional €5 surcharge, taking the fee up to €30.
“Lufthansa Group is continuing to place differentiated offers in dedicated distribution channels,” an official explains. “The differentiation is a further step towards a personalised and differentiated offer within airline distribution.”
Last month, two carriers in International Airlines Group, British Airways and Iberia, also announced a GDS fee from November.
