Thorsten Dirks to become new executive board member
As Lufthansa positions Eurowings as a low-cost rival to Ryanair and EasyJet, Thorsten Dirks has been appointed to Lufthansa’s supervisory board, responsible for Eurowings’ development and expansion.
Hamburg-born Dirks joins Lufthansa Group from being chief executive of German telecoms firm Telefonica Deutschland. His appointment for three years is effective from May 1, 2017.
He succeeds Karl Ulrich Garnadt who will be retiring from the board when his contract ends at the end of April.
Lufthansa describes Dirks as an “experienced digital expert”, while chief executive Carsten Spohr said he “has shown that he achieves economic success with firm cost control. He has demonstrated his ability to increase customer focus with immense innovative energy.”
