Germany and Turkey discuss joint management

Germany and Turkey continue to discuss a possible partnership between their flag carriers. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan have reportedly agreed in principal to establish joint management between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines. The two have already cooperated closely in the past. Both are members of Star Alliance, LH having brought THY into the alliance in 2008, while back in 1989 the two carriers founded SunExpress, an Antalya-based venture, as 50-50 partners.
“Lufthansa and Turkish are in a permanent dialog [on] how we can improve service to our passengers,” a Lufthansa spokesperson tells ATW. “We are not only Star partners, we are also codeshare partners.”
Turkish Airlines’ chairman, Hamdi Topcu, tells Reuters: “Now we [are] evaluating how THY and LH can work closer together. The results are currently not foreseeable.”
