Partnership exploits “most important growth market”
Germany’s biggest airline and one of China’s major carriers have solidified their partnership, enabling them to operate joint flights between China and Europe.
Lufthansa called Air China an “ideal partner” for expanding in Asia, at a signing ceremony at Beijing Capital International Airport.
The deal, which also covers group subsidiaries Austrian Airlines and Swiss and builds on an outline signed in 2014, coordinates the two groups’ schedules, offers common fares and improves offers to corporate clients and frequent flyers.
The agreement is designed to exploit “the most important growth market worldwide”, namely Asia, said Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa’s chief executive.
Passengers flying from China to Europe will be able to connect at Lufthansa’s hubs in Frankfurt, Zurich and Vienna, while more routes in China with Air China are promised from summer 2017.
The deal comes as both Lufthansa and Air China grapple with tough competition from Gulf airlines and other carriers. For this reason, the companies said they would not raise fares.
