Lufthansa accelerates fleet modernisation

Group is taking delivery of 23 new planes in 2014

Lufthansa’s tenth Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental has landed at Frankfurt Airport. The “dash-8” is one of seven brand new aircraft that will be joining the airline group in February and March.

Over the next few weeks at Frankfurt, these “ultra-modern jets will be arriving like pearls on a necklace”, as Lufthansa puts it. Alongside three Boeing 747-8s, LH has acquired one Airbus A380, one A330 and two A320.

In addition, Germanwings will receive an A319 and Lufthansa Cargo a Boeing 777F freighter. All in all, the group expects to receive 23 “ultra-modern” commercial aircraft this year.

Following a final fit-out at Lufthansa Technik in Frankfurt and operational approval, the new Boeing 747-8 arrival could start scheduled passenger flights by the end of February. It will replace an older Boeing 747-400, which will be taken out of service. The new plane is around 30% quieter than the older model.
