Meanwhile debate over a third runway at Heathrow rages on
Gatwick’s directors say they are looking at the implications of building a new runway at the airport. London’s second biggest airport will evaluate the environmental, noise, surface access and economic impacts of various runway options. The announcement comes as tension mounts over airport capacity in London and debate over a third runway at Heathrow rages on. Building a second runway at Gatwick could transform the airport into an international hub.
“There are clear practical advantages of a new runway at Gatwick,” Gatwick’s chief executive Stewart Wingate said. “When compared with a third runway at Heathrow, we would have a significantly lower environmental impact whilst adding significantly more capacity.”
