UK capital’s hotel rates at lowest levels since March
Hotel prices in London have dropped to their lowest levels since March, falling by as much as 16% from last month to this month, according to recent research by travel tech company Trivago.
The Trivago Hotel Price Index shows that accommodation in August is the cheapest it has been in four months, with an average price per night of £143 (€168), down from £171 in July.
There has also been a fall in prices year-on-year, with London pricing 15% lower this August compared to August 2015 when the average price was £169.
The decrease may be due to concerns about terrorism following recent events around Europe, suggested Graham Balmforth, national sales manager at SuperBreak.
“London is the biggest selling city in the UK, but the market has gone down a little bit, mainly because there are some people who are still cautious about going there. There has been this drop in prices by the hoteliers, to try and generate the market,” he said.
Other cities in the UK are also seeing a fall in prices. Hotel accommodation in Manchester cost £104, 17% less than in July. Brighton has seen a decline of 15% to £112.
Edinburgh was the only city in the index where prices rose in August, jumping 35% to £202, due to the popular annual International Fringe Festival.
