Geneva-based Air Transport Rating Agency creates new list

A list of the world’s safest and most reliable airlines has just been published by the Air Transport Rating Agency, based in Geneva. SAS does not have a place on the list, but Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France and KLM do. Among the safest carriers in the US are Delta Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways. Qantas, which has suffered several high-profile safety incidents in recent years, failed to make it into the top 10. It used to be known as the world’s safest airline. The only non-European and non-American carrier to get a mention is Japan Airlines.
Fifteen criteria were taken into account to compile the list, including the average age of the airlines’ aircraft, the fleet’s homogeneity and “technical, human, organisational and external” elements. The world’s 10 safest airlines, in alphabetical order are named as:
Air France-KLM
AMR Corporation (American Airlines, American Eagles)
British Airways
Continental Airlines
Delta Airlines
Japan Airlines
Lufthansa
Southwest Airlines
United Airlines
US Airways
