Union awaits new pay offer from Lufthansa

The decision on whether a potentially damaging strike at Lufthansa has been postponed to be made this week. The union that represents more than 10,000 flight attendants and pursers in Germany, UFO, rejected Lufthansa’s more recent pay offer on Friday. It is likely that the airline will make a new offer by the middle of this week, and this is when the union will decide on the strike – a possibility that seems increasingly likely, according to UFO’s chief negotiator Dirk Vogelsang.
To cut costs, Lufthansa is freezing investment, cutting around 3% of its workforce (3,500 jobs), shifting the contracts of pilots and cabin crew at Austrian Airlines to a low-cost subsidiary and raising the profile of its low-cost carrier Germanwings. But the union wants higher pay after three years and a promise that LH will not use temporary workers.
