On 25 September 2017, Luftfartsverket (LFV), the Swedish Civil Aviation Administration became the first operational user of the Surveillance Data Distribution System (SDDS), developed by EUROCONTROL on behalf of its Member States. The SDDS is the successor of the surveillance Messaging and Conversion Equipment (RMCDE) that has been in use in various European countries since 1991.
The SDDS uses state-of-the-art technologies to enable air navigation service providers to exchange surveillance data efficiently. In line with the need for increased security levels, the SDDS was developed as a security gateway from the outset.
LFV initially commissioned four SDDS systems on the 25 September 2017.
Two SDDS systems per air traffic control centre, Stockholm (ESOS) and Malmö (ESMM), deliver four redundant data streams (one stream from each SDDS) to all clients.
As of 5 October 2017, four airports’ air traffic services use the SDDS:
Landvetter (ESGG)
Såtenäs (ESIB)
Trollhättan(ESGT)
Jönköping (ESGJ).
In the coming months, LFV will regularly add more airport clients to the SDDS, notably Bromma (ESSB), which is the third largest airport in Sweden.
“LFV has been working intensively with its IP infrastructure over the last two to three years and efficient, effective and safe surveillance data distribution is an essential part of this infrastructure.
“As the first operational user with SDDS, we have now reached a new level with the possibility of distributing, handling and managing surveillance information all over our own network and with external parties.
“It has been a fascinating journey together with EUROCONTROL and other potential SDDS users over the past two years in reaching the current status. We have been operational with SDDS since 25 September 2017 so SDDS has now run for two months without any issues whatsoever. We are already using some of the features SDDS offers, to the benefit of our users and customers!
“We would like to thank EUROCONTROL for the good support we have been given at every stage of our journey towards commissioning over the last two years. We have a clear belief that it is this kind of cooperation that will make us and the ATM society successful,” declared Anders Andersson, Surveillance Systems Manager at LFV.
“I am very happy with the positive feedback from LFV Sweden on their SDDS commissioning process. The SDDS is, together with ARTAS and SASS-C, one of the three cornerstones in the EUROCONTROL surveillance services. Recognising the importance of a secure and efficient exchange of surveillance data between ANSPs across Europe, EUROCONTROL is committed to supporting the deployment and long-term maintenance of the SDDS in its Member States, and potentially beyond.
“It is an excellent example of the close cooperation between EUROCONTROL and the future SDDS users, leading to a very cost-efficient development of a state-of-the-art component in the ATM surveillance chain,” observed Joe Sultana, Director Network Manager.
