Lego ‘playhouse’ to open soon in Billund

Design inspired by concept of interlocking blocks
A new Lego project inspired by the concept of interlocking blocks is almost ready to open in the Danish toy manufacturer’s home base of Billund.
Designed by the architecture firm BIG led by Bjarke Ingels, Lego House – Home of the Brick is 12,000sqm in size and has a large keystone at the top based on the proportions and style of a 2 x 4 Lego brick.
The facade is covered in clay tiles to give the illusion of being made out of Lego bricks. A view of the structure from a drone can be seen here.
“The building itself reflects what ‘Lego play’ and the Lego values are all about,” Ingels says. “The brick has been incorporated into the architecture in a simple but ingenious way, and it visualises the systematic creativity that lies at the very core of all Lego play.”
Inside are a number of colour-coded ‘experience zones’ representing phases of learning, for example red being creative, green social and yellow emotional. Seven years in the making, it is due to open on September 28.
