KLM shown to provide stability in Europe

Airline has least number of changes in route network

While airlines such as Norwegian, SAS and Ryanair open and close new routes all the time, KLM appears to stand for the opposite, with the least number of changes in its route network among European airlines.

Analysis by anna.aero shows that KLM is probably the most stable airline in Europe in route management, as only four lines have been closed in the past year with only five added.

The analysis also shows that Scandinavia is a very important market for KLM. Oslo-Amsterdam is its fourth biggest route in terms of capacity per week after London Heathrow, Barcelona and Paris with 6480 seats a week. Copenhagen-Amsterdam is fifth (6353 seats per week), Stockholm twelfth (5,495 seats).

With the new route launched to Ålesund in Norway, KLM now departs from seven Norwegian airports to the hub at Schiphol.

KLM has taken over Amsterdam-Lyon from Air France and besides Ålesund has started new routes to Fukuoka in Japan, Harare in Zimbabwe and tiny Manston, its 12th in the UK. It also plans a route to Florence, currently operated by SkyTeam partner Alitalia. The idea with Manston in Kent, the fifth shortest route in the KLM network, is to “feed” passengers into KLM’s international network.
