Attack took place outside city football stadium
Turkey has suffered more fatal bomb blasts, this time in the form of a twin attack outside a football stadium in Istanbul, killing 38 people and injuring around 166 others, 14 of whom remain in intensive care.
Aimed at police officers, the explosions were triggered by car and suicide bombs less than a minute apart. They occurred outside the Beskitas stadium, close to some major hotels in the city, around two hours after a match had ended on Saturday evening.
Two of those killed were civilians, the rest police officers. The attack is believed to have been the work of Kurdish separatists. Islamic State has been blamed for some bombings in Turkey this year, while Kurdish militants have claimed responsibility for others.
“Sooner or later we will have our vengeance. This blood will not be left on the ground, no matter what the price, what the cost,” interior minister Süleyman Soylu said at a funeral for five of the officers killed.
