Suspected militants attack hotels and police station

Around 50 people have been killed after suspected Islamist militants attacked hotels and a police station in the small Kenyan coastal town of Mpeketoni, the BBC reports.

Fighting continued for several hours and buildings were on fire in the town, which is a mainly Christian community that lies close to the popular tourist islands of the Lamu Archipelago.

Neighbouring Somalia is not far away and Islamist al-Shabab fighters have raided Kenya a number of times since Kenyan forces entered the unstable country in 2011 to combat the militants.

The latest attack started on Sunday evening as many locals were watching a World Cup match on television. Gunmen threw explosives into the police station, stole weapons and set hotels on fire.
