The ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP) will convene its important 10th Meeting at ICAO Headquarters in Montreal next Monday.
Meeting for the period from 1-12 February, the CAEP’s extensive cross section of international experts will be seeking to finalize a number of key developments, including recommendations for new aircraft CO2 and non-volatile Particulate Matter (nvPM) standards, and the technical work required in support of an international aviation Global Market-based Measure (GMBM) scheme.
The aircraft CO2 and nvPM standards will then be subject to final review and adoption under the 36 State ICAO Council during one of its 2016 sessions. The full aviation GMBM proposal will be considered by all 191 ICAO Member States at the UN aviation agency’s 39th Assembly this 27 Sep-7 Oct.
“The commitment of the CAEP’s wide cross section of international technical experts, and the results they have produced in support of aviation’s environmental goals, cannot be over stated,” stressed Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, ICAO Council President. “The results of its upcoming 10th meeting will be instrumental to Council’s assessments of the new standards it is recommending, as well as to the comprehensive environmental deliberations and actions by ICAO Member States at our upcoming 39th Assembly.”
Additional developments under review at CAEP/10 will include a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology proposal for sustainable alternative fuels, noise issues pertaining to helicopters, unmanned aircraft and future supersonic aircraft, and ICAO-agreed trends on noise, NOX and CO2.
“ICAO has been working across a comprehensive basket of measures to address international aviation emissions since our States directed us to do so at our 38th Assembly in 2013,” he added. “We have made excellent progress since that time and the CAEP’s efforts remain invaluable to the environmental progress being achieved on all aspects of this programme.”
