Smash hit has over 60 million views on YouTube
Tourism officials in Ibiza are angry about a song remixed in Norway about taking drugs on the popular holiday island. The track has become a smash hit around the world, with over 60 million views on YouTube.
The remix by Norwegian duo Seeb of “I took a Pill in Ibiza” by US singer Michael Posner stormed to the top of the UK’s singles chart this week and is in the top 10 in the Billboard singles chart in the US.
The lyrics describe a comedown after taking drugs at an Ibiza party. The video shows revellers at a nightclub going wild in all kinds of ways – not the kind of image of the island that tourism officials are working hard to promote.
“We have invited the author of this song to discover Ibiza because we have much more to offer besides the nightlife which is known worldwide,” tourism director Vicent Ferrer told AFP.
“We have museums, beaches, culture, gastronomy, we have a wide offer, but unfortunately we have been typecast this way. Unfortunately someone who wants to consume pills or alcohol can be found in any tourist destination, the fact that it is only us who are pigeonholed does not seem fair.”
