Another 24 days of strikes likely in the coming months

Passengers flying Iberia face further disruptions in the coming months – another 24 days of strikes by pilots. The strike days will take place in March, April and May – including Easter. There have already been 12 days of strikes since December and Iberia parent company IAG has said that every strike day costs the airline €3 million. It calls the strike “an intolerable challenge to the company and to Spanish society at large,” threatening “Spain’s reputation for credibility and solvency.” It asked pilots “and particularly those who do not support the union’s suicidal position, to abort this strike and return to the table to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.”
The Spanish pilots union SEPLA is protesting “the company’s refusal to negotiate” over the March 25 launch of the short- and medium-haul Iberia Express. IB Express is part of the airline’s efforts to bring the company back to profitability.
