IATA: Air Passenger Market Analysis – July 2014

Air travel volumes rose by a strong 5.3% in July year-on-year, a slight pick-up on the June 4.6% increase

• After a slowdown in the growth trend in Q1, air travel volumes have been expanding solidly over recent months;

•Measures of economic activity show improvement in several key regions, including Asia Pacific;

•Airlines in Asia Pacific recorded a 5.6% rise in international RPKs, with the Chinese economy and regional trade improving;

•European airlines saw a similar increase in international travel (5.3%);

•But weakness in key economies like Germany due to the Russia-Ukraine crisis could threaten demand going forward;

•Domestic air travel in Russia continues to increase at near double-digit rates, supported by reduction in fares;

•Industry load factors remain high but have shown slight decline throughout 2014 due to strong expansion in capacity;

•The outlook for air travel remains broadly positive, despite recent adverse developments in some regions;

•Global business activity at the start of Q3 is in line with the 4 month high reached in June;

•Moreover, although weakness has crept into the Eurozone recovery, there are signs of improvement in emerging markets like China.
