Sustainability fund launched with adventurer Lewis Pugh
In an effort to preserve nature, culture and the environment along Norway’s coast as well as in Antarctica and the Arctic, the ferry and cruise line Hurtigruten is launching a global initiative which it calls the Hurtigruten CSR Foundation.
The fund’s ambassador is the British environmentalist and adventurer Lewis Pugh, known for swimming in icy waters wearing only Speedos, goggles and a swimming cap.
An ocean advocate and maritime lawyer, Pugh frequently swims in vulnerable ecosystems to draw attention to their vulnerability. He swam across the North Pole to highlight the melting of Arctic sea ice, then across a glacial lake on Mount Everest to publicise the melting of the glaciers in the Himalayas. The United Nations Environment Program has appointed him Patron of the Oceans.
“Together with all our partners, employees and guests, we will reduce our footprint on the environment and nature,” pladged Jacob Trampe Broch, Hurtigruten’s Nordic marketing manager. “Because our ships go along fjords and sea that is rarely frequented, it is especially important for us to respect its wildlife so that future generations can also enjoy the fantastic nature.”
