In the near future, Gate 49 at the expanded Helsinki Airport will be able to accommodate this superjumbo. Here’s a preview of this modern aviation icon.

From first class to economy, flying with the Airbus A380 allows passengers to experience new standards of in-flight comfort. The airliner is the world’s largest and most spacious, and it combines inspired cabin design with leading aviation technology.

Soon, Gate 49 at Helsinki Airport’s expansion will be able to accommodate this superjumbo. Here are eight facts about this modern aviation icon.

1. The A380 is 15 tons lighter than it would be if made entirely of metal. Most of its fuselage is made of aluminum alloys, while composite materials comprise more than 20 per cent of its airframe.

2. The A380 can accommodate a maximum of 853 people in an all-economy class configuration.

3. The 4400m2 surface of the A380 is covered in three layers of paint weighing around 500kg.

4. During takeoff, the A380 wing will flex upwards by over four meters.

5. The air in the A380 cabin is changed every two minutes, and the temperature can be selected between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius.

6. Airbus introduced its innovative Brake to Vacate technology on the A380, enabling flight crews to more effectively manage approach and landing by pre-selecting the optimum runway exit. This helps to reduce runway occupancy time by up to 30 per cent.

7. The A380 produces only about 75 grams of CO2 per passenger kilometer, supporting the aviation industry’s commitment to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

8. An A380 takes off or lands every two minutes somewhere in the world. Source: http://www.aircraft.airbus.com/aircraftfamilies/passengeraircraft/a380family/
