Total being charged this year in US rises by another $100 million

Hotels in the USA are taking record amounts in fees and surcharges in 2011, according to research. Hotels will reap around $100 million more in hotel surcharges, such as fees to use the internet, fees to use the business centre and service fees for groups, than they did last year. The total will be $1.8 billion. A substantial part of that growth is down to rising occupancy in the US, from 4% to 5%, as well as the ever-broadening range of fees being added.
Bjorn Hanson, divisional dean at the NYU Tisch Centre for Hospitality, led the research, which is based on hotels’ public and financial information and interviews with hospitality and corporate travel executives.
