Upmarket hotels like the trend, but not all women do
The Hamilton Crowne Plaza is the latest upmarket property in the US to reserve a whole floor for female business travellers. Those who stay on the 11th floor will be met with bath salts and body products, a magnifying mirror, nail polish, nail files and a curling iron.
The trend is growing as more women assume top company positions. The hotels have floors with special key access and amenities might include hair straighteners, curling irons, flatirons, yoga mats, smaller slippers, lifestyle magazines, fresh flowers, a dedicated female staff member, satin-padded hangers, skirt hangers and emergency kits with nylons and sanitary products.
Other hotels catching onto the trend include the Naumi Hotel in Singapore, The Dukes London and the Georgian Court Hotel in Vancouver.
“My research identified three things that are important to women business travellers and that influence their decision regarding where to stay: safety; empowerment; and pampering,” said Judi Brownell, professor of organisational communication at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration.
But not all women like the idea.
“It is an interesting concept, but I think more of a gimmick, and somewhat insulting,” says Elizabeth Toedt, a retired Navy commander. “Women have struggled many years for equal treatment, and a ‘convent type’ hotel floor is a step backward.”
