Large numbers of Americans feeling safer than in Europe
One of the big growth stories in the cruise market for 2017 is Alaska, which will attract a forecast 995,210 passengers, up 7% on last year, according to the 2017-2018 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.
Alaska saw steady growth from 1992 to 2008. More than a million passengers landed in the scenic and sparsely populated US state in 2008.
But cruise numbers started to fall in 2009, when an infamous head tax came into operation, dropping to a low of 811,920 in 2011, when the tax was finally revised following pressure from the cruise industry.
The current growth trend is strengthened by large numbers of Americans preferring to travel closer to home, feeling safer in Alaska than, say, in Europe.
Among the industry players in Alaska, Princess Cruises is the market leader this year with six ships and a passenger capacity of 288,450, followed by Holland America with seven ships and 243,880 passengers.
